DFW Plumber Certification Changes Present New Opportunities

2026 surge in Texas Master Plumber certification drives local growth, innovation
The number of licensed Master Plumbers in Dallas and Tarrant Counties has grown 11% in 2026 alone, according to August 2026 TSBPE data. Unfortunately, not every existing plumbing company views this as a positive.
“I’ve worked at companies that actively discouraged me from getting my Master’s license, because they were worried I would leave,” states Jerry Williams of Mother Modern Plumbing, who received his Master Plumber’s license this August.
In the state of Texas, a contractor must earn Responsible Master Plumber (RMP) certification from the TSBPE to own and operate a plumbing company.
However, some active plumbing contractors in the Metroplex see the increase in Master Plumbers as an opportunity to improve service to the area’s 963,000+ homeowners.
“There still aren’t enough of us to meet the overall demand,” says Dustin Marx, CEO of Mother Modern Plumbing, a Dallas-Fort Worth plumbing company. “Our service area contains almost 9 million people. More Master Plumbers are a good thing.”
“I would rather support my team getting more skilled than discourage them from better serving our customers- even if that means a few of them leave.”
Former Mother Master Plumbers Dillon Ashton and Colton Staley left in 2026 to form new plumbing services operating out of Blue Mound and Prosper. Ashton’s early success has led him to pursue hiring other plumbers to his staff to handle demand.
“Opening my own business was always the goal,” says Ashton. “Working for someone who encouraged that, and was transparent about profitability, made things easier.”
That spirit of entrepreneurship is key to the company’s mission.
“Three of our team members reached Master Plumber status this year, and two more are testing in the fall,” explains Steven Smith, Mother’s Responsible Master Plumber (RMP-43457). “It’s fulfilling to be a part of their success.”
Smith noted the achievement of new Master Plumbers Mario Cabrera, Jerry Williams and Joe Stailey.
To Marx, the growth of his plumbing staff reflects his own entrepreneurial journey and his company’s commitment to transform local plumbing service culture.
“When we foster high-level service and business skills, the marketplace is healthier for homeowners,” Marx states. “More good plumbers means more good work. More good work means happier neighbors.”
