Prospective learners are becoming more sophisticated consumers. They want evidence, not promises. Policymakers and employers are also asking tougher questions about what success looks like.”— Riaz Moola
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, May 22, 2026 /
EINPresswire.com/ -- Despite billions invested globally into online learning and workforce development, the UK’s reskilling economy is struggling to deliver meaningful employment outcomes at the scale required by today’s labour market, according to global tech education provider HyperionDev.
As employers continue to battle shortages in software engineering, data science, AI and cybersecurity skills, increasing numbers of adults are turning to online training programmes to transition into digital careers. However, HyperionDev CEO Riaz Moola says the sector’s current approach is overly focused on access to content rather than employability itself.
“The problem is no longer whether people can access online learning,” says Moola. “The real question is whether these programmes are actually helping people move into sustainable careers. Too often, the answer is no.”
The comments come amid growing debate in the UK around adult reskilling, AI disruption, workforce readiness, and the long-term effectiveness of digital education models.
According to HyperionDev, the rapid expansion of self-paced online learning has created a market saturated with courses, but not necessarily with successful career outcomes. Industry-wide concerns around low completion rates, limited learner support, and weak alignment between training and employer expectations are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
“The UK is facing simultaneous pressures around productivity, AI adoption, and widening digital skills gaps,” says Moola. “At the same time, many adult learners are investing significant time and money into programmes that do not adequately support them through to employment.”
Moola argues that the most effective reskilling models are those built around structured mentorship, applied learning, and measurable outcomes rather than passive content consumption alone.
“What consistently works is human support, accountability, project-based learning, and close alignment with employer needs,” he says.
“Adult learners balancing careers, financial pressure, and family responsibilities need more than video libraries. They need support systems designed around real behavioural challenges.”
HyperionDev, which partners with universities and institutions globally to deliver mentored tech education programmes, says the future of digital training will increasingly depend on combining AI-enabled learning with stronger human guidance rather than replacing human educators entirely.
“There’s a misconception emerging that AI will make human mentorship less important in education,” says Moola. “In reality, the opposite may be true. AI can enhance learning delivery, but mentorship remains critical for motivation, context, feedback and employability.”
The company also believes the broader sector is moving toward greater scrutiny around outcomes transparency, with both learners and employers becoming more sceptical of unverified employability claims.
“Prospective learners are becoming more sophisticated consumers,” Moola says. “They want evidence, not promises. Policymakers and employers are also asking tougher questions about what successful reskilling actually looks like.”
HyperionDev says the next phase of the reskilling economy will likely favour education providers that can demonstrate measurable economic mobility, verified career outcomes, and clearer accountability around learner success.
“The UK does not need more noise in education,” says Moola.
“It needs more proof.”
